What are some common troubleshooting tips for a garage door which is not working?
These may sound very basic, but start with these before calling a professional repair technician.
- Is the garage door opener plugged in? Is there power going to the outlet where the garage door opener is plugged in?
- Has the “vacation” setting or lock button on your garage door opener wall unit been activated?
- Have the safety sensors been knocked out of alignment?
- Is there anything blocking the light beam of your safety sensors? Use a clean cloth to gently wipe the lenses of the light beam safety sensors. This is to remove any dirt or particles which may be blocking the light beam and triggering the safety protocol of the garage door opener system.
- Using the emergency release cord, disconnect the garage door opener from the garage door and then try raising the garage door. If you are able to raise and lower the door, the opener is not operating correctly. If the garage door “travels” when placed at a half open position, the door is out of balance and needs some adjustment. What does a maintenance call / tune up service on my garage door system consist of?
First, we do not recommend inexperienced individuals change out torsion springs. Due to it being an inherently dangerous activity, we recommend having a qualified professional do it. While not a comprehensive list, if you decide to change out the springs yourself, here are some things to consider:You’ll need to have winding bars, safety goggles, vice grips, wrenches, a ladder and preferably another person to assist you.
When unwinding and winding the torsion spring(s), be sure you are not working next to the spring. Instead, work on the side so you are away from the spring. This will hopefully minimize injuries if an accident with the spring occurs.Make sure to get the correct size spring(s) for your torsion tube and garage door weight. Make sure to install the torsion spring(s) on the torsion tube in the correct winding direction.
Make sure cables attached to the drum are securely fastened before “loading” the torsion spring(s).After loading the torsion spring(s), make sure the cables attached to the drum have the correct amount of tension on them so they do not become loose once the door is opened. This could create a dangerous situation when the door is closed.
